Why Live Recording Is Different
Live recording captures what studio recording can't: the interaction between musicians, the dynamic of a real performance, the energy that comes from playing together in a room. This isn't better or worse than studio recording — it's different, and for certain projects it's exactly the right approach. A live-recorded track feels different from a produced one, and that feeling is the point.
Live performance recording at StudioToGo uses the Studio C mobile kit — Neumann U87 Ai, UAD Apollo Twin X with multiple inputs, and the same software stack as Studio A. The Apollo Twin X handles simultaneous multi-input recording, capturing individual instrument and vocal sources on separate tracks for maximum flexibility in the mix.
What We Capture
Live sets and rehearsal sessions for solo artists, duos, and small bands. Guitar, bass, keys, and vocals are the most common configuration, but we can extend the setup for percussion and additional instruments. Multiple microphones can be used simultaneously — each source lands on its own track rather than a single stereo mix, which means a proper mix is possible afterward.
From live to mixed: After capturing the performance, the multitracks can be mixed at Studio A on the analog hybrid chain. This gives you the energy of a live performance with the polish of a properly mixed record. See our mixing service for details.
Live Recording vs Studio Recording
Studio recording allows more control — individual tracks, unlimited takes, overdubs, precise editing. Live recording captures the performance as it happens. There's more bleed between instruments, more room sound, and less opportunity for correction. These aren't problems — they're character. Many of the best records were made live. The decision depends on what the music needs.
